NEW BLOG

My new blog is located here.

Its still under construction, but I'm dipping out of here.

Timeline

So here it is. Another endless project but with a very interesting turn out. I will say one thing though, I am completely sick of abstract photoshop tutorials and it may look easy, but it was a pain.

Finding Inspiration in Weird Places

Inspiration

Face it: finding inspiration can be a bitch. I can spend hours hunting through countless inspiration galleries on the web trying to find inspiration and still accomplish nothing after a few hours. So if you're like me, check out this site that has 100 different links of web sites devoted to our inspiration pleasure and necessity.

The KU Biodiesel Initiative

Here are my finals for the Biodiesel branding project:

Concept Statement:

"Never again will you be capable of ordinary human feeling. Everything will be dead inside you. Never again will you be capable of love, or friendship, or joy of living, or laughter, or curiosity, or courage, or integrity. You will be hollow. We shall squeeze you empty and then we shall fill you with ourselves."

Twenty rules

I've read a lot of articles like this book introduction online and you come to notice that almost every one of them is the same, easy enough. Knowing the "rules" of design is vital in creating acceptable work, but good work is produced when a designer knows how to bend/break the rules successfully. I try to do this with all of my work but unfortunately most of the time our school projects are simply bout following the rules strictly, such as the type 01 final.

Some of the best advice that I have ever gotten is simply that when reading articles like these rules we need to only take in that information that matters most to us. Of these twenty rules, I chose a few that really stuck out and seemed the most important to me:

Graphic Design: Brand Updates

Here are my updated brand designs including: logos, press kits and a web designs.

Book Covers: Round 1

Response: Foundation

Foundation is a great collection of inspiration in which each highlighted artists showcases a few works and gives the history/idea behind the design. This is a great read for our current project because it gives us insight into the decisions and solutions of each of the professional designs, allowing us to see how other professionals think.

Throughout the article I took note of a few designs that really appealed to me and that I thought were good inspiration for my upcoming covers:

Response: The Writer's Toolbox

As designers we tend to get caught up in the aesthetic and actual design, turning our backs on the critical thinking and planning that help formulate and define good design. In other words, we like to make shit look cool, but hate to plan accordingly. In Andrea Marks, Writing For Visual Thinkers, she not only explains the need of creative writing/planning in designing, but certain methods and how-to's for each. Andrea takes us through creating Mind Maps, Concept Maps, Freewriting, Brainwriting, Word Lists, Outlines, Critiquing, Reflective Writing, Journals and sketchbooks in depth.
