Response: Foundation

Foundation is a great collection of inspiration in which each highlighted artists showcases a few works and gives the history/idea behind the design. This is a great read for our current project because it gives us insight into the decisions and solutions of each of the professional designs, allowing us to see how other professionals think.

Throughout the article I took note of a few designs that really appealed to me and that I thought were good inspiration for my upcoming covers:

1. Stephen Doyle's: Phaedra

I love the out of focus toy horse and the technical typography incorporated throughout the composition. The vast amount of white space creates a very clean and professional look while the images are appealing and tone setting. I would like to incorporate this very technical type, white space usage, and out of focused imagery into my covers.

2. Chip Kidd's: Minority Report

Again the unfocused imagery in the top and interesting type really catch my eye. I love the use of the icons within semi-structured white squares over the unfocused imagery. It creates a very clean but abstract look as it carries on downward to the title text within the off-centered blocks. To me this sense of almost chaotic structure is a great theme for my book series.

3. Paul Sahre's: Demonology

Simply, the hygienic background gradient and type are what really drew me in. Though I am very much so leaning towards a sans-serif typeface, the very clean serif on top of this clean gradient give me a sense of order and curiosity.

4. Paul Sahre's: The Ice Storm

Although taking a very grungy look as compared to the others, I really enjoy the limited color palette and typography used in this cover. I love how the grey and whites create a very sterile background but encompass the subject matter, distorting it. The keys within the ice are very distorted but you are given just enough information to see what it is.

Overall, this is a great source of inspiration and as designers, we are always seeking inspiration in an unlimited amount of places. The power behind this article is simply within the fact that we can see the finished work with the concepts that those professional artists put within them. Inspiration at its finest.
